Leading financial executive Joseph J. Grano, Jr. to address CCSU’s Commencement exercises on Saturday, May 19 at 10:30 a.m. in Hartford Civic Center; CCSU marks fifth year of its Doctorate of Education degree

NEW BRITAIN – May 14, 2007 -- Central Connecticut State University will hold Commencement Exercises for undergraduate, graduate and doctoral degree candidates on Saturday, May 19, 2007, beginning at 10:30 a.m. at the Civic Center in Hartford.

“Some 1,893 students are eligible to participate in this year’s commencement exercises,” noted Dr. Carl R. Lovitt, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. “Degree recipients have come from throughout Connecticut, as well as from Canada, Ecuador, Jamaica and 19 other states. A total of 1,375 undergraduates will be joined by 512 students who are eligible for graduate degrees. With this commencement we mark the fifth anniversary of CCSU’s offering the first doctoral program licensed within the Connecticut State University System. Six candidates will be awarded CCSU’s Doctorate of Education (Ed.D.) in Educational Leadership, joining 29 other Doctoral students who have received the Ed.D.degree.”

Dr. Paulette Lemma, Associate Vice President, Academic Affairs, and Dean of the School of Graduate Studies, noted: “Currently, we have over 2,500 graduate students in attendance. CCSU graduates students in nine Master’s of Arts (M.A.) and 28 Master’s of Science (M.S.) degree programs, as well as a Master’s in Business Administration (M.B.A.), and two Sixth-Year Certificate programs.”

This year’s Commencement speaker is Joseph J. Grano, Jr., Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Centurion Holdings LLC, a company that advises private and public companies. From 2001-2004, he was Chairman of UBS Financial Services Inc. (formerly UBS PaineWebber). In addition to being one of the financial service industry’s leading executives, Grano is involved in a wide range of educational and philanthropic endeavors. In 2002, he was appointed by President George W. Bush to serve as the Chairman of the Homeland Security Advisory Council. He relinquished his position in August 2005.

Grano joined PaineWebber in February 1988 as President of Retail Sales and Marketing, and became President of PaineWebber Group in December 1994. As President, he oversaw a series of important and dramatic restructurings at the firm, including the acquisition of Kidder, Peabody in 1995 and J.C. Bradford in 2000. Finally, Grano was instrumental in helping to bring about the merger of PaineWebber with UBS in 2000, when Grano was named President and CEO of UBS PaineWebber and the following year was named Chairman and CEO.

Grano is a veteran of the U.S. Special Forces (Green Berets), and attained the rank of Captain in the Army.

Grano holds Honorary Doctor of Laws degrees from Pepperdine University and Babson College, as well as an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from Queens College, City University of New York. He is a member of the Council for the United States and Italy, a member of the City University of New York’s Business Leadership Council and a member of the National Board of D.A.R.E.
