Selection of Departmental Chairs

Department Chairs at Central Connecticut are appointed by the President for a period of three years. Departmental bylaws generally govern the number of terms an individual may serve as chair, but in only the most unusual of terms will the President appoint a Chair for more than three terms. Departments select a list of three recommended candidates for the position according to procedures specified in the department's bylaws. The President will give serious consideration to the departmental recommendations but is not confined to the list when making the final selection.

Chairs are normally appointed one year prior to taking office. During the ensuing year, the Chair-elect works with the outgoing chair to ensure a smooth transition. The duties, responsibilities and perquisites of the position of Department Chair are described in the CSU/AAUP contract.
