Lisa Ptak - Education Major |
By the time she was a junior at Crosby High School in Waterbury, Lisa Ptak was certain she wanted to be a history teacher. Knowing of her aspirations, three members of the history department at the school devised an unprecedented experiment for Ptak during her senior year: She was to teach four class periods, each with a different group of freshmen. Joseph Macary, one of the teachers, says that the feeling among the three colleagues was: “We’ve got a great student here—let’s let her learn.” FULL ARTICLE >>

Taylor Loomis - English Major |
A high school epiphany led Taylor Loomis, a junior from Litchfield, to become an English major. It all began with a teacher at Litchfield High who demonstrated that literature was organically linked to historical, philosophical, and scientific ideas. Loomis realized then that studying English was not simply about reading a lot of novels: “It was about exploring ideas and tying them all together. And it was really about exploring everything around us: there wasn’t a topic English couldn’t touch.” FULL ARTICLE >>

Eddie Miranda - Finance Major |
|
When Eddie Miranda entered CCSU as a first-year student, he couldn’t imagine a more perfect educational path than Central’s hospitality and tourism program. After all, he had dreamed of owning a hotel since he was six years old and had relatives who loved the career field. Then one fateful summer term, a course in finance changed everything. It was love at first sight. Miranda eagerly took four finance classes the next semester and became a finance major. Now a senior, Miranda reads the
Wall Street Journal, is fascinated by the recent spate of bank mergers, and smilingly admits that his favorite course of all time is probably “Financial Statement Analysis.” He says, “I love reading statements. I just love numbers.” FULL ARTICLE >>> |

Sara Owen - Business Major |
CCSU student Sara Owen is proud of her Yankee heritage and shows it in her strong work ethic. In May, when she receives her B.S. in Management and Organization with a concentration in Marketing, she will be able to put that Yankee ingenuity into practice by preparing to launch her own business. That goal, she says, is much closer due to the educational and practical experiences with a business plan and a marketing strategy that she has gained during a recent internship. FULL ARTICLE >>>

Sara Ziegler - Communication Major |
| When the Communication Department at CCSU wanted to develop a promotional video about its state-of-the-art television production program, Dr. Karen Ritzenhoff, associate professor of communication, turned to a video veteran: communication major Sara Ziegler, who has been making videos since she was eight. Ritzenhoff said, “Sara is not only an enthusiastic, devoted, and passionate student, she is also a high achiever and meets her goals with comparative ease.” Ziegler teamed with fellow communication major Lance Cortez to produce a high-quality seven-minute video that drew positive attention to the communication program. The video is just one of the highlights in the academic career of Ziegler, who is the first of her family to attend college. FULL ARTICLE >>> |
