Academic
Requirements |
Most degree programs
require 122 credits, but some require more. The BSED
degree, for example, requires 130 credits. Most
academic programs contain the following elements:
- GENERAL
EDUCATION –
a broad overview of the curriculum taken in the
first two years of study. All students must
complete the General Education requirements which
are organized into four Study Areas and four Skill
Areas. The intention of General Education is to
allow exploration of many disciplines in the
interest of developing a well-rounded person who can
function at a high level in today’s society.
-
MAJOR – in-depth
study of one discipline required of all students.
Requirements for each major are listed in the
undergraduate catalog.
-
MINOR – A
secondary field of study required as a complement to
some majors is called a minor. Students who
complete a Connecticut community college’s
associate’s degree program in a field NOT offered at
CCSU may apply to the Dean of the School of Arts and
Sciences for a waiver of the minor requirement.
-
FREE ELECTIVES –
These are additional courses that do not constitute
specific elements of the general education program,
the major, or the concentration but which count
towards the fulfillment of the total credits
required for your degree. Here’s your chance to
take some courses in topics that you find
interesting. Some students prefer to take
additional courses in the major or concentration.
The number of free electives required varies
depending on your choice of major and/or
concentration.
-
PROFESSIONAL
EDUCATION – Any student seeking teacher
certification must complete Professional Education
courses. These courses are restricted to students
who have been formally admitted to the Professional
Program.
