MODALITIES GENERAL POLICIES

Used Only Under Direct Supervision Of ATC

Direct supervision means that an ATC is present in the athletic training facility when the specific modality is being used.  Athletic Training students may not use the modalities listed below until they have demonstrated competency as determined by their instructor in PE 445 Therapeutic Modalities. The ATC must initial the student-athletes soap notes approving modality usage. Only an ATC may approve the use of the following modalities:

  • Ultrasound

  • EMS

  • US/EMS

  • Isokinetic

  • Testing

  • Cervical Traction

  • Tens

  • Loosing Traction

  • Intermittent

  • Compression

*  Phonophorisis and Iontophorisis require a MD prescription. Only the certified athletic trainer may use iontophorisis as directed by MD.

Used At The Discretion Of The Athletic Training Student

Although the student may use the modalities listed below, it is expected that they adhere to proper treatment protocol.  If the student has doubt as to which modality to use, they must consult with the supervising ATC.

  • Contrast Bath

  • Ice Packs

  • Ice Massage

  • Cold Whirlpool

  • Warm Whirlpool

  • Progressive Resistive Exercise Program (PRE)

  • Exercise Programs

  • Isokinetic Protocols

  • Cardiovascular Equipment

  • Moist Heat

Decisions to use the various modalities must be based on:

  • Type, severity, and location of injury

  • Indications

  • Contraindications

  • The athlete's willingness to accept the modality
