REQUIREMENTS FOR THE CLINICAL EXPERIENCE

The Athletic Training Education Program requires the student to make a serious time commitment to the clinical aspect of the program. A great deal of time is demanded of the athletic training student.  Athletic training students are expected to be present at all practices, scheduled treatments, and competitions.  In additions the athletic training student must complete clinical competency checklists. CCSU’s athletic training education program will maintain the semester clinical schedule as listed below. The clinical experience will take place over FOUR (4) consecutive semesters  (and one entire preseason camp) in Central Connecticut State University’s Athletic Training Facility commencing the semester after successful completion of EXS 217 Care & Treatment of Athletic Injuries.

  1. For the 1st Semester Pre-Clinical Experience (required for admission to professional program) the student must:

    1. Have a University GPA of 2.50.

    2. Have a Major GPA of 2.50.

    3. Have successfully completed EXS 217 Care & Treatment of Athletic Injuries with a C- or better grade

    4. Have successfully completed or currently be enrolled in BMS 380 Emergency Medical Technician

    5. Complete OSHA training

    6. Read and sign confidentiality statement
  2. For the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th semester Clinical Experience - EXS 315 Practicum I in Athletic Training, EXS 316 Practicum II in Athletic Training, and EXS 319 Practicum III in Athletic Training the student must:

    1. Have been admitted into the Athletic Training Education Program

    2. Maintain a University GPA of 2.50.

    3. Maintain a Major GPA of 2.50.

    4. Successfully passed BMS 380 and have current State of CT EMT Certification*
      *Athletic Training Students who are enrolled in Practicum I, II, and III who fail to obtain EMT certification prior to the start of the semester must become First Aid Certified. The student is responsible for registering and paying the necessary course and certification fees.  A copy of both CPR and FA will be kept in the student’s academic file. 

    5. Complete OSHA training

    6. Read and sign confidentiality statement.

  3. For EXS 445 Internship in Athletic Training the student must:

    1. Have been admitted into the Athletic Training Education Program

    2. Maintain a University GPA of 2.50.

    3. Maintain a Major GPA of 2.50.

    4. Possess current EMT certification (minimally state of CT EMT-B certification)

    5. Purchase Liability Insurance

Clinical assignments begin immediately on the first day of classes each semester and conclude with finals week, except for the preseason clinical experience, which begins in early August and concludes after Labor Day.  Please refer to “clinical progression” and “attendance & outside employment in the student’s guide for detailed information.  Typically, clinical experiences will include sport coverage on weekends, university holidays and vacations, and unusual AM and PM time assignments.  Athletic Training students assigned to sport coverage are required to be available on weekends, holidays, and during scheduled vacation.
     

  5. Students involved in the clinical component will:

    1. Be prepared to participate in the clinical component Monday through Friday (every other Friday off) through the conclusion of the football season (mid-November).  After which, the student will be scheduled for either a Monday / Wednesday or Tuesday / Thursday assignments. All students will have every other Friday off.  The assignment of sport coverage on weekends continues throughout the conclusion of the semester.  Depending on the athletic training students sport rotation, the athletic training student may be assigned for coverage during weekends, holidays, and school vacations.

Avoid scheduling classes between the hours of 1:00 PM – 7:00 PM Monday - Friday during the Fall Semester. Similar hours should be avoided either on MWF or TRF during the Spring Semester.
