BRITAIN
– Three
Central
Connecticut
State
University
students
have won
a
nationwide
business
case
competition
sponsored
by a
major
international
financial
services
company.
Cathy
Martini,
a senior
who is
majoring
in
Management
Information
Systems
(MIS) in
CCSU’s
School
of
Business;
and Eric
Gibb and
Ian
MacDonald,
both of
whom are
juniors
with
Networking
majors
in
Central’s
School
of
Technology,
and MIS
minors
in the
School
of
Business,
have won
this
year’s
Information
Technology
Business
Case
Competition,
according
to the
sponsor,
St. Paul
Travelers.
"The
competition
exposes
students
to real
industry
trends
that
might
affect
their
careers,”
noted
Dr.
Marianne
D’Onofrio,
department
chairwoman
and
professor
of
management
information
systems
at CCSU.
"These
students
combined
the
knowledge
and
experience
they
gained
in
business
and
technology
courses."
This
year’s
competition
centered
on the
role of
information
technology
professionals
in a
hypothetical
company
called
“X5” in
the year
2020. X5
was
described
as the
leading
writer
of
specialized
insurance
products.
The case
highlighted
the
current
IT
processes
in X5
and
posed
questions
on how
industry
trends
would
affect
the
future
of X5.
“The
students
had to
conduct
research
and
present
a cogent
argument
regarding
IT
trends,
laws and
regulations
and the
IT
professional
of 2020
in
Company
X5,”
said Dr.
Joo Eng
Lee-Partridge,
CCSU
professor
of
Management
Information
Systems
and
faculty
sponsor
of the
CCSU
team.
The
final
presentation
for the
case
competition
was held
at St.
Paul
Travelers
in
Hartford,
where
CCSU
beat the
team
from
Worcester
Polytechnic
Institute,
last
year’s
winners.
The
first
prize
award
came
with a
$1,000
check
for the
team.
