CCSU students win business competition
By SCOTT WHIPPLE, Staff Writer
NEW BRITAIN – Three Central Connecticut State University students have won a nationwide business case competition sponsored by a major international financial services company.

Cathy Martini, a senior who is majoring in Management Information Systems (MIS) in CCSU’s School of Business; and Eric Gibb and Ian MacDonald, both of whom are juniors with Networking majors in Central’s School of Technology, and MIS minors in the School of Business, have won this year’s Information Technology Business Case Competition, according to the sponsor, St. Paul Travelers.

"The competition exposes students to real industry trends that might affect their careers,” noted Dr. Marianne D’Onofrio, department chairwoman and professor of management information systems at CCSU. "These students combined the knowledge and experience they gained in business and technology courses."

This year’s competition centered on the role of information technology professionals in a hypothetical company called “X5” in the year 2020. X5 was described as the leading writer of specialized insurance products. The case highlighted the current IT processes in X5 and posed questions on how industry trends would affect the future of X5.

“The students had to conduct research and present a cogent argument regarding IT trends, laws and regulations and the IT professional of 2020 in Company X5,” said Dr. Joo Eng Lee-Partridge, CCSU professor of Management Information Systems and faculty sponsor of the CCSU team.

The final presentation for the case competition was held at St. Paul Travelers in Hartford, where CCSU beat the team from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, last year’s winners. The first prize award came with a $1,000 check for the team.
