Passports

A valid passport is required for all course abroad programs.  The expiration date of the passport should be at least six months beyond the intended date of return travel.

Information on how to obtain or renew a U.S. passport may be found on the State Department’s website at www.travel.state.gov/passport/index.html.

Individuals who travel on a foreign passport should contact their country’s nearest consulate or embassy to obtain information on replacing or renewing their passport.  A listing of the foreign consulates and embassies in the U.S. can be found on the web at:

www.state.gov/www/travel/consular_offices/ fco_index.html

Visas

In cases where U.S. citizens are required to have a visa to travel to a Course Abroad destination, the CIE will collect individual passports and send them together as a group to obtain the required visa from the Consulate/Embassy.  Students who do not submit their passport when requested will be required to obtain their own visa, at additional personal cost.  Course Abroad participants who travel on passports issued by other countries are responsible: (1) for determining whether a visa is necessary; and (2) for applying for the required visa in a timely manner.
