Health and Safety

Informed Decision-Making
So that students may make informed decisions about participating in course abroad programs, all course abroad application packets will contain a copy of the current Department of State Consular Information Sheet on the country/countries to be visited (available at http://www.travel.state.gov).  In addition, students will be advised to review the Center for Disease Control’s advisory for travel to that area (available at http://www.cdc.gov)  on their own.

Health and Liability Forms
Once students have been admitted into a course abroad, they will be asked to complete two forms, the Statement of Responsibility, Release, Indemnification and Authorization to Participate form and the Health Insurance and Emergencies form, both of which are included in the course abroad application packet. These forms are intended to inform the students of the risks inherent in international travel, assign certain responsibilities, and to obtain heath and emergency contact information from them to be used in the event of a medical or other emergency. A designated faculty member in each course abroad program will be given a set of the forms completed by each participant in their program prior to departure. This set of forms must be taken abroad by the faculty member for reference as necessary.

Insurance and Overseas Medical Treatment
The University requires all students participating in course abroad programs to be covered by appropriate health insurance. In

addition to the required health insurance, all course abroad participants are required to enroll in supplementary medical evacuation and repatriation of remains insurance, with minimum coverage levels of $25,000 and $7,500 respectively.  Full-time students within the CSU system are automatically insured a policy which meets these requirements.   All other Course Abroad participants will be charged a $36 premium for AssistAmerica coverage for the duration of the course abroad program.  This fee will be assessed in addition to the CIe Travel Program Fee charged for the course abroad program.

Once admitted to a course abroad program, students should contact their healthcare insurance provider to determine the coverage levels and the procedures to be followed should medical treatment be necessary. Course Abroad directors do not carry funds to be used to pay students' medical bills overseas.  All such bills are the responsibility of the individual receiving the medical care.
