Teach English Abroad at Ouyang Yu Experimental Middle School

CCSU is now accepting applications for 2009-2010!

Background

Ouyang Yu Experimental Middle School (OYY) was founded in 1986. Prior to the founding of
this school, there were no complete schools in this rural area of China serving secondary or high school students. Ouyang Yu is located in Xintang town, Hengdong county, about two hours south by train from Changsha, the capital of Hunan Province. The mission of the school is to raise the quality of education available in Hunan Province and to encourage disadvantaged students to aim high.

Program Description
In addition to supporting students from Ouyang Yu Experimental Middle School studying at Central Connecticut State University, the C.J. Huang Chinese Student and Educational Development Fund within the CCSU Foundation, Inc. also supports the exchange of CCSU students to Ouyang Yu to teach English. Teachers are paid a basic stipend plus some expenses and are expected to spend at least one full year teaching English at the school. A two-year commitment is preferred.

Teachers instruct small, medium-to-advanced English conversation classes. These students tend to be more motivated and an unusually high percentage goes on to college.

Teachers are provided a good-sized, two-bedroom apartment, located on campus. Ordinarily, accommodations are shared with another foreign teacher. The apartment has a typical kitchen and bathroom set-up. The apartment is in a larger building which houses other teachers and staff of the school.

Living in a small, rural town is perfect for a person seeking an immersive, perhaps more traditional Chinese experience where a native English speaker and foreign teacher is very highly valued and appreciated.
