The Hospital for Special Care Thrift Shop volunteer

Definition: The Hospital for Special Care Thrift Shop, located at 89 West Main Street, New Britain, seeks college students to assist with the operation of the store. This can be a short term project from January through March, 2014, but students are welcome to go beyond. Completely run by volunteers, additional support is needed while some volunteers are away for the winter. Students will sort merchandise, stock shelves, and assist customers. Ideas for creative marketing are also welcome. A four hour block once a week is ideal.  Location: 89 West Main Street, New Britain  Qualifications: Interest in community engagement. Retail experience is a plus!

Literacy Volunteers child care helper
Definition: Our center provides free education to women and their children in New Britain, to strengthen their literacy skills and support families learning together. Volunteers work 1 day a week during the program. The Program runs on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays from 9:30-1:00. Volunteers assist our head teachers in the daily activities in our Play and Learn rooms for children age 6 months-3 years of age. Our volunteer promote and encourage enjoyment of reading at a young age.
Location: Literacy Volunteers of CT, New Britain Public Library Qualifications: Interest in community engagement. Must also enjoy working with children!

Content helper
Definition: Help Community Central with content creation and other written items to help us get the word out about our community, events, and programs. This volunteer position requires a student with writing skill and an interest in journalism. Location: Community Central or off-site Qualifications: Interest in community engagement and an understanding of various types of writing.

SmART Waste Leader
Definition: Help continue the very popular SmART Waste Program. The program travels to different schools and after-school programs to work with groups of youth from K-12 grades. Students do a local trash pick up and learn how to recycle properly. Following this activity is an art project using recycled materials. Location: Community Central or off-site Qualifications: Interest in community engagement, sustainability, and art. We are seeking multiple positions, inculding a leadership role.

Gallery Intern
Definition: Help to promote and plan gallery events at the new "Gallery 66." The new up-and-coming gallery needs someone with marketing ideas and a keen eye for art to help business owners get things off the ground! Location: Community Central or Gallery 66. Qualifications: Interest in community engagement and an understanding of marketing and galleries.

Volunteer Coordinator helper
Definition: Help Community Central build a volunteer database and keep track of their hours and duties. Help to plan and organize volunteer appreciation events.

Marketing helper 

Definition: Help Community Central with social media and marketing on campus and in New Britain to promote our events and programs. This volunteer position requires a student with creativity and a knack for P.R.

Website Content Manager

Definition:

Help maintain a website (http://nbynetwork.wix.com/nbyn) for The New Britain Youth Network.  A Network of youth service agencies in New Britain. The website content manager will work with the Network contact person to write, edit, and proofread site content, including an online calendar of events.  

Location: Negotiable – can be done from anywhere

Qualifications: Marketing and communication skills would be a plus.

High School Media Program Mentor 

Definition: Mentor and build relationships with high school students involved in our after-school program, "ParaDYM Academy." As a mentor you will work with teens from New Britain who are learning how to use video and media equipment in an after-school setting. Students will be engaged in a variety of projects, but mentors must ensure students stay focused on academics and their future.
Location: Community Central Qualifications: Experience being a mentor is a plus.

HALS Academy Newspaper helper

Definition:

Be part of a unique project at HALS Middle School (right near CCSU). Work with awesome seventh and eighth grade students to create a monthly newspaper that will be printed in the New Britain Herald.

Location: HALS Academy

Qualifications: Writing or design talent is a plus. Experience being a mentor or tutor is also a plus.

Jumpstart Member

Definition:

Jumpstart recruits committed and passionate college students to work with preschool-age children on reading, writing and social skills. Jumpstart Corps members serve 10-12 hours a week in local early childhood centers, partnered with a small group of children.

Location: New Britain pre-school classrooms

Qualifications: Belief in, and commitment to, the Jumstart mission

Compensation: Work Study (if eligible) and a Segal Americorps Education Award

Mentor with Community Central Mentoring Program

Definition:

As a volunteer mentor you will work with children in the New Britain School District who are in need of a positive role model in their lives. You will work with the children in a classroom setting and help them through different lessons which involve social skills, teamwork, and trust building exercises. 

Location: Vance Elementary School with on-campus meetings

Qualifications: This program is highly recommended for Social Work and Teacher Education students, but it would be of value to many other disciplines as well.

Compensation: Work Study, possible internship
