Blue Devil Sports Highlights
Football—Head coach Paul Schudel finally got his first coaching victory at CCSU, after seeing his team lose the first four games. Junior tailback Clinton Dunston ran for a career-high 180 yards to help the Blue Devils defeat St. Francis of Pennsylvania, 19-6. Senior linebacker Ian Whittingham also had a big game, making 14 tackles and recovering two fumbles. The last one Whittingham pounced on in the endzone for a touchdown.
Men's Soccer—The team is currently 3-6 overall this season and 0-3 in NEC play. The Blue Devils have already eclipsed last season's win total and have proven to be stiff competition even in their losses. Renson Haynes leads the team in scoring with three goals and an assist, followed by Rohan Smith and Gareth Wilkinson with a goal and two assists apiece.
Women's Soccer—The team is now 3-5-1 overall and has a perfect 3-0 record in the Northeast Conference. Two freshmen, goalie Sabrina Mariani and midfielder Kelly Shimmin, have both been named NEC Rookies-of-the-Week this season. Nicole Davis leads the Blue Devils with three goals and an assist, followed by Denise Thomas with a pair of goals and an assist.
Volleyball—Head Coach Linda Sagnelli's volleyball squad has an 8-10 overall record and a 1-0 mark in the Northeast Conference. The Blue Devils defeated Quinnipiac 3-1 in their only NEC match of the season to date. Freshman Jennifer Cote took home NEC Rookie-of-the-Week honors last week after leading her team in the win over the Braves.
Women's Tennis—The Blue Devils have played just two matches so far this season. Co-captain Rose Anderson anchors the number one singles position and has improved her play over the summer. The team has struggled to find the depth needed to challenge for the NEC crown but will improve in the spring when soccer players Sarah DeCormier and Denise Thomas join the team full-time.
Men's Tennis—Returning all but two players from last season's team, including the top five singles players, the Blue Devils are turning a lot of heads in the NEC. The Blue Devils placed an impressive fifth out of 20 teams in the ECAC championships early in the season. Eric Stone and Quin Parkhurst both reached the semi-finals in their respective flights during the tournament. Stone, a senior, returns to the Blue Devils after a two-year hiatus and is playing number one singles, while freshman Parkhurst is undefeated in dual matches at number five singles.
Women's Golf—Junior Colleen McDonnell led the Blue Devils to their second straight Mt. Holyoke Invitational title. McDonnell finished the two-day tournament with a 161 (81-80). The Blue Devils were tied for the lead after the first day of play at 337, but a superior second-day performance of 79 (seven strokes over par) from Kori Goulet helped CCSU to its one-point victory over second-place Methodist University.
Men's Golf—The team finished in second place in the Toski Invitational in Amherst, MA, last week, trailing only Yale University in the 22-team field. Senior Travis Woods finished in fourth place, four shots behind the leader, while sophomore Mike Welch finished fifth.
