Four CCSU Students Receive Barnard Awards

Four CCSU students with distinguished academic records and exceptional leadership qualities were honored recently with the Connecticut State University Henry Barnard Foundation Award.

Bernice Adjoa LeMaire, who graduates in May with a B.S. in industrial technology, will pursue a master’s of science in print technology at Rochester Institute of Technology. Not only has she earned a 3.93 GPA, but with her specialization in graphics technology and a minor in business marketing, she is very proficient in both Macintosh and IBM platforms and is skilled in several image creation and editing programs applicable to industry. She has developed Web sites for University departments and several businesses. On the Dean’s List for the past four years and also a Collegiate All-American Scholar, LeMaire was a three-time scholarship recipient from Litton Industries and a two-time scholarship recipient from Packaging Professionals. On campus, she has been active in the Golden Key International Honor Society, Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society, and the African Students Association, among other clubs and organizations.

Elizabeth Ortoleva, who graduated last year with a B.S.Ed. in art education and a concentration in painting, achieved the distinction of being recognized on the 2003–4 National Dean’s List. She is a member of the Golden Key International Honor Society. The Center for International Education twice awarded her scholarships after she was selected to participate in learning experiences in Sicily. Active in several clubs on campus and having been an Orientation Leader/Advisor, she filled the demanding role as editor for four years of The Helix. As a visual artist she has exhibited paintings and drawings in three art shows on campus and at the Long Wharf Theatre Gallery in New Haven, CT. Connecticut-certified to teach K–12, she was a para-professional in the New Haven Public School Mandatory Summer School Program, an after-school teacher in the West Hartford Extended Experience program, and an art teacher for CCSU’s Saturday Morning Children’s Art Workshop.

Louise Lettre-Klingensmith, a psychology major graduating this May, has maintained a near perfect GPA. She has excelled academically while being actively involved in community work through internships and volunteer work in the human services field. With a goal of becoming a licensed clinical social worker serving those with trauma and addiction issues, she is a non-traditional student who brings life-experience to the classroom. After a successful career in the health care management field, she made a decision to shift careers to social work. Her commitment to community service is evident by her continued work at the Sexual Assault Crisis Services agency of the YWCA in Hartford, her advocacy work for a mentally disabled individual, and her mentorship of a woman in recovery from substance abuse.

Edward Ramsdell is one of CCSU’s best students and a Command Sergeant-Major in the U.S. Army Reserve. He has been chief senior instructor in a military police school and has served at a combat support hospital base in Fort Hamilton, NY. He served in Desert Storm, and his numerous medals and badges attest to his meritorious military service. The finance major, who graduates this May from CCSU, is also scheduled to graduate from the U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy in July. Outside the classroom, he has been active in the Finance Club, participating in the club’s field trips. A leader in the business world, Ramsdell is vice president of Command Security Corporation, Lagrangeville, NY, where he is responsible for mergers, acquisitions, and divestitures—a position where he puts to good use skills acquired at CCSU’s Business School.
