Literacy Center Makes Learning Fun

Student Aiveniece Estrada, Literacy Center teacher Karen MacInnes, and Dr. Jesse Turner have a discussion about the importance of reading. For 31 years, CCSU’s Literacy Center has served children struggling with their reading skills by offering clinics that help make learning fun. Dr. Jesse Turner, associate professor of reading and language arts, serves as the director of the University’s Literacy Center. “As one of only three literacy centers in the State of Connecticut, its reputation continues to grow,” states Dr. Turner.

The Center’s “kid friendly” environment overflows with reading games, books, magazines, and high-tech computers installed with the latest software. The walls are decorated with artwork designed by children, and the name of each child hangs from the ceiling. The space also houses evaluation rooms with microphones, video cameras and computers to assess the progress of each student.
