Training grant-ed:ITBD gets $150,000 to assist local manufacturers

New Britain Herald STAFF WRITER

NEW BRITAIN — Central Connecticut State University’s Institute for Technology and Business Development is getting a $150,000 boost to its employee training programs, U.S. Rep. Chris Murphy, D-5th District, announced Monday.

ITBD will use the money, which comes from a federal Small Business Development Administration grant approved last year, to boost the productivity and effectiveness of the state work force. Specifically local manufacturers can use ITBD for training of employees and employers in 21st-century operations and techniques.

Murphy made the announcement accompanied by representatives of ITBD, CCSU and the local business community at Admill Machine, an aerospace parts manufacturer at 150 John Downey Drive.

Admill is an example of how manufacturing still works in this state,” Murphy said. Specialized manufacturing is “still a part of our economy that will continue to grow.”

“New Britain has long been known as a city of innovation,” said Richard Mullins, head of ITBD and CCSU executive assistant to the president.

According to Murphy, the money will assure 500 employees at companies like Admill will get the specialized training they wouldn’t receive otherwise.

The money will likely be employed in training programs over the next three years, Mullins said. Various manufacturing companies can apply and, if they qualify, gain specialized training from ITBD for their employees through the grant.

For further information about industry training, Mullins encouraged local manufacturers to talk to Tom Lorenzetti, ITBD’s business development manager, at (860) 832-0704.
