Hartford Job Corps Academy partners with Institute of Technology and Business Development to provide manufacturing students internship opportunity.

Eight Hartford Job Corps Manufacturing students have been selected to participate in a manufacturing training initiative sponsored by five private manufacturing companies and Central Connecticut State University (CCSU).
According to Christine Flammia, Connecticut Department of Labor Liaison to the Job Corps, only five slots were available to Hartford Job Corps Academy students. After CCSU and representatives from the school’s Institute of Technology and Business Development (ITDB), interviewed each student, they unanimously decided, however, to accept and enroll all eight Job Corps students in the program.
Flammia thanks Richard Mullins and Thomas Lorenzetti from ITBD, as well as Richard Cheney from CCSU, for the opportunity. “This is great news for the future of our youth and manufacturing in Connecticut,” she explains. “Programs like this one will tie together the education system and business communities to prepare youth with the skills employers are looking for.”
The curriculum was devised between Central Connecticut State University faculty and representatives from the five companies, she adds. Potential students were required to take a written test and agree to an interview. Students were selected based on their motivation, goals, heart, and desire; not just their technical abilities.
The program will last approximately four months and includes 100 machine lab hours of training, 40 hours of classroom (blueprint reading, shop math, etc.), and 10 to 15 hours of culture shock – which includes how to behave, teamwork, and basic people skills.
The students will then be required to complete 40 hours of on-the-job training. Upon successful completion of the training, participating employers are hoping to hire many of the students.
Flammia sees this initiative as “a positive step toward what we need in Connecticut to assist with the problem of high youth unemployment. Youth represent our future workforce and integrating basic education, career education, and workplace skills into the educational system early on will make a positive impact on youth employment in the future.”
She asks everyone to “stay tuned” for future updates and outcomes of this initiative.
