Remarks at SPX's Apache Landing
Ceremony |
| |
Thank you to
President Ron Felix and VP Matt
Gawlak for inviting us here today. I
am Rick Mullins; I am the Executive
Assist to the President of Central
CT State University for Community
Business Programs. A previous
University commitment does not
permit CCSU President Jack Miller to
be here today.
Before, I begin my remarks I would
like to share with you a personal
perspective from my attendance here
today. Upon arrival, I walked around
the Apache Helicopter parked in the
field to my right – I was in awe at
the collection of technology and
sophistication in this engineered
flight vehicle. This became even
more real when I walked behind the
tail rotor of the aircraft and I
observed (4) SPX employees pointing
to the yoke of the tail rotor. One
of the employees said “look at that
yoke – it is stamped March 2007 – it
was made here it probably, came off
my machine”. I looked forward toward
the University and thought “wow” –
in my youth some of my friends
parents worked here at Fenn Mfg. I
often wondered what they did here –
I graduated from CCSU’s School of
Engineering Technology and learned
more about mfg in CT. And today, I’m
getting a dose of reality –
particularly from those (4)
employees. The pride and commitment
demonstrated in the remarks of those
employees - Doesn’t that make your
heart pound? – Knowing that your
work and efforts of SPX staff are
supporting our troops and freedom
around the world – to me that is the
feeling of Americanism.
On behalf of CCSU's President
Miller, I offer the employees and
management team of SPX CCSU’s
sincere congratulations for the
excellent job the management and
labor teams have done in deploying
quality, productivity and process
improvements at SPX.
CCSU’s Institute of Technology and
Business Development is committed to
supporting CT’s workforce
development needs. I over see its
operation. In 2003, Tom Lorenzetti
from CCSU’s ITBD met with members of
the SPX Executive team. A
progressive plan was defined that
would improve quality, redefine
processes and improve productivity.
The plan included a comprehensive
road map including; a Needs
Assessment, Team Building, FMEA
Training, Gage Calibration, SPC, CNC
Training, GD&T, AS 9100 Training,
Lean Improvement and Six Sigma
techniques.
Tom’s knowledge of ITBD resources
and funding sources across the state
made the implementation of the plan
feasible. Tom orchestrated a funding
model that included assistance from
the following;
NU CL&P PRIME Program - Tom Morano
and Carl Santoro
CCSU’s SBA Earmark with support from
CT‘s Congressional Delegation
Capital Workforce Partners Incumbent
Worker Training funds – Tom
Phillips\Pam Nabors
CT Center Adv. Tech. Aerospace
Defense Initiative – Elliot Ginsberg
& Bob Torriani
Dept. of Labor’s 21st Century
Workforce Development Funds –
Commissioner Mayfield, Peter Raymo.
Abby Fieldler and Mark Filmore
As necessary Tom connected CCSU’s
School of Engineering & Technology,
School of Business and Career
Services Dept – Joe Zeoli with SPX’s
Human Resource Dept to bring the
brightest talent to open positions.
CCSU is very pleased to be part of
the on going transition at SPX. The
goals are to transition the
workforce in a highly competitive
world market, to improve processes,
increase productivity, and produce
quality components that are
dependable, reliable, on schedule
while embracing continuous improving
along the way. Today is a
celebration of teamwork between
organized labor and management in
the private sector, CL&P, the Metro
Hartford Alliance, agencies of State
Government such as CCSU the CT DOL,
Office of Workforce Competitiveness,
Dept. of Economic and Community
Development, The Capital Workforce
Board and the CT Center of Advanced
Technology in reaching these goals.
CCSU is committed to collaboration
in support of workforce development
at SPX and companies across the
state. We wish you the best of
success in your continued journey.
