Description of the Award

CALDECOTT MEDAL

What is the Caldecott Medal?
The Caldecott Medal is awarded to an illustrator “for the most distinguished American picture book for children.”

Who decided the winner?
A division of the American Library Association, the Association for Library Service to Children, selects the winner  from books published during the previous year.  They consider “excellence of execution in the artistic technique employed...of delineation of plot, theme, characters, setting, mood or information through the pictures.”  The artist must be a citizen of the United States but does not need to be the author of the book.  The winner is announced by the ALA at their midwinter meeting.

When did the award begin?
The award began in 1936 because picture books did not compete favorably with books for older readers in capturing the coveted Newbery Medal.  As with the Newbery Medal, Frederic Melcher proposed this award and suggested it be named for Randolph Caldecott.  The first award was presented in 1938 to Dorothy P. Lathrop for "Animals of the Bible."

Why is it called the Caldecott award?
Randolph Caldecott (1846-1886) was a well-known English artist and illustrator of books for children.  Randolph Caldecott's illustrations are known for action, vitality and humor.

What does the award look like?
The Caldecott Medal is made of bronze.  It was designed in 1937 by Rene Paul Chambellan, an American scultpor.  Chambellan recreated Randolph Caldecott's illustrations on both sides of the medal.  One side portrays John Gilpin's ride from the book by Caldecott.  The other side depicts a pile containing four-and-twenty blackbirds being set before the king.
