Description of the Award

 Carnegie Medal Award

What is the Carnegie Medal Award?

The Library Association Carnegie Medal is awarded annually for an outstanding book for children and young people, written in English and published in the United Kingdom.  It is modeled after the Newbery Award of the American Library Association.

Who decides the winner?

The Carnegie Medal is administered by the British Library Association.  The committee consists of the chair and vice chair of the Youth Libraries Group and eleven other members of the Library Association.  In addition to the winner, there are highly recommended, commended and honor books.  The same committee awards the Greenaway Medal.

When did the award begin?

The Carnegie Medal began in 1936 to mark the centenary of the birth of Andrew Carnegie (1935-1919.)  The select winner is presented in the following year.

What special criteria are used to select this award?

All categories of books are eligible.  They must be written in the English language and published first or co-published in the United Kingdom.

Why is it called the Carnegie Medal Award?

Andrew Carnegie provided funds to build over 600 libraries in the United Kingdom in addition the thousands world wide. In 1935, the Library Association decided that a medal celebrating children's books would be an appropriate way to celebrate the centenary of his birth.
