Charlotte
Zolotow Award
What
is the Charlotte Zolotow Award?
The
Charlotte Zolotow Award is given annually to the author of the best
picture book text published in the United States in the preceding
year.
Who
decides the winner?
The
Charlotte Zolotow Award is administered by the Cooperative
Children's Book Center (CCBC), a children's literature library of
the School of Education, University of Wisconsin-Madison. A
committee of children's literature experts selects the winner from
the books published in the preceding year.
When
did the award begin?
The
Charlotte Zolotow Award began in 1998.
What
special criteria are used to select this award?
Picture
books written for children from birth through age seven, written by
a U.S. citizen or resident, and first published in the United States
are eligible for consideration. The genre may be fiction,
nonfiction or folklore as long as it is presented in a picture-book
format. Books written by Charlotte Zolotow are not eligible
for the award. The committee may select up to 3 "Honor
Books" and up to 10 titles that will be listed as "Highly
Commended."
Why
is it called the Charlotte Zolotow Award?
Charlotte
Zolotow, who attended the University of Wisconsin in Madison on a
writing scholarship, was a distinguished book editor with Harper
Junior Books for 38 years. She was the author or more than 65
picture books, including classics such as Mr. Rabbit and the
Lovely Present and William's Doll.
What
does the award look like?
The
award is a round, bronze medalian inscribed around the edges
CHARLOTTE ZOLOTWO AWARD CCBC. The center shows a flower with
the letters "C" and "Z" on either side of the
stem. In addition to the medallion, the winner receives $1000.
Both are presented in the Spring during an event that honors the
career of Charlotte Zolotow.
What
is the Charlotte Zolotow Lectures?
Established
in 1998, the lecture also honors Charlotte Zolotow by bringing a
distinguished children's book author to the University of Wisconsin
in Madison to deliver a free lecture that is open to the public.
