Description of the Award

 Margaret A. Edwards Award

What is the Margaret A. Edwards Award?

This award honors a living author's lifetime achievement for writing books for young adults.  These works  have been accepted by young people as an authentic voice that continues to illuminate their experiences, emotions and gives insight into their lives.

Who decides the winner?

The award is sponsored by School Library Journal, which provides a monetary gift and highlights the author in the June issue, and ALA's division Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA.)

When did the award begin?

The award began in 1988 when Neff A. Perlman, publisher of School Library Journal, suggested to Libbian Gerhardt, Editor-in-Chief, that an award was needed to recognize an author whose works speak to the concerns of young adults.  The award began as a biennial recognition; now it is given every year.

What special criteria are used to select this award?

In addition to serving as "a window to the world" to help young adults, ages 12 to 18, better understand themselves and their world, the books must be of acceptable literary quality and currently popular with a wide range of young adults in many different parts of the country.  The award is for specific titles and these must be at least five years old.

Why is it called the Margaret A. Edwards Award?

Margaret A. Edwards, administrator of young adult programs at the Enoch Pratt Free Library in Baltimore, promoted young adult literature by booktalking in local schools and even renting a horse drawn wagon to bring books to young adults who could not travel to the library.  In addition Margaret Edwards shared her vision of service to young adults with the library profession through talking, writing and convincing publishers that young adult literature was a respected field of study.

What does the award look like?

The author receives a citation, a check (which was $2000.00 in 2002) and is featured in the June issue of School Library Journal.
