 Pura Belpre Award

What is the Pura Belpre Award?

The Pura Belpre Award is presented to a Latino/Latina writer and a Latino/Latina illustrator whose work best portrays, affirms, and celebrates the Latino cultural experience in an outstanding work of literature for children and youth, up to age fourteen.

Who decides the winner?

The award committee is comprised of a chair and three members of Association for Library service to Children (ALSC), a division of ALA, and three members from the National Association to Promote Library and Information services to Latinos and the Spanish-Speaking (REFORMA), an ALA Affiliate.

When did the award begin?

The award began in 1996 and is offered biennially.

What special criteria are used to select this award?

The award-winning books must be published in the United States or Puerto Rico, and the winners must reside in either the United States or Puerto Rico.  The committee considers works of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry published in English, Spanish, or bilingual format that have the Latino cultural experience as a theme.

Why is it called the Pura Belpre Book Award?

This award was named after Pura Belpre, the first Latina librarian from the New York Public Library.  She enriched the lives of Puerto Rican children in the United States by preserving and disseminating Puerto Rican folklore.

What does the award look like?

The bronze-colored circular award features a relief of Pura Belpre, a book, and two children.  Across the top is the inscription, "Pura Belpre Award."
