The counseling programs within the Department of Counselor Education  & Family Therapy at Central Connecticut State University (CCSU) prepare students for professional careers in Marriage and Family Therapy, School Counseling, Rehabilitation Counseling, Mental Health Counseling,Addictions Recovery Counseling, and Student Development in Higher Education.

Courses are designed to develop student competence in the application of theory-based counseling models, to understand the concerns of diverse client populations, to enhance students's personal and professional development, and to promote the dignity and welfare of all individuals.

The practicum and clinical internship provide students with valuable opportunities to apply their skills in a field-based setting under close supervision.

Programs are accessible to full and part time students, offering flexible advising hours and classes in the late afternoons and evenings.

Admission to the department automatically allows students to begin taking classes. Once accepted into the Graduate School each student is assigned an academic advisor. The advisor serves as a guide while the student is in the program.

Students in all of the counseling programs are encouraged in their ongoing efforts toward self-development, self-awareness, and scholarly achievement.

They all share a common vision to become competent and caring professionals who adhere to the highest standards of their profession promoting the dignity and welfare of their clients. 

Notice of Admission Deadlines

The School Counseling, Professional and Counseling, and Student Development in Higher Education programs admit students only one time per year. The deadline for receiving all admissions materials, including official transcripts, is March 1st for fall admission. Please see the admission requirements for more information on the admissions process.

The Marriage and Family Therapy program admits students in both the Fall and Spring semester. Applications must be received no later than March 1st for the fall semester and November 1st for the spring semester. Please see the admission requirements for more information on the admissions process.

A central goal of the Department of Counselor Education and Family Therapy is to support outreach in the recruitment of diverse students. We believe that it is essential that our students represent a diversity of backgrounds, perspectives, experiences, orientations, attitudes, and skills. We as a department are committed to recruiting and retaining students from underrepresented groups in order to assist in achieving our mission and objectives. Our coursework integrates diversity and multicultural influences across the curriculum. Faculty and students are encouraged to explore their own attitudes, knowledge, and behaviors in regard to discrimination so our practice reflects the principle of social justice.

The faculty of the Department of Counselor Education and Family Therapy works closely with the admissions office to recruit students to fully represent the diversity of the larger society. One effective way to recruit a diverse student population is to have a diverse faculty. The department has diligently worked to recruit and maintain faculty that represent diverse backgrounds. Faculty attend local, regional, national, and international conferences to enhance their professional development but also use the opportunity to recruit students from diverse backgrounds.
