CCSU's Dr. Carol J. Carter-Lowery receives "Education Award" from West Indian Foundation

Congratulations to Dr. Carol J. Carter-Lowery, Professor Emeritus in the Department of Educational Leadership & Instructional Technology, for receiving the “Education Award” from the West Indian Foundation in Hartford, Connecticut on October 26, 2013. “Educating today for a better tomorrow” was the theme of the awards ceremony. Dr. Carter-Lowery is an educator who is committed to public education for all student learners.  Throughout her educational career she established a broad range of professional educational experiences that include: teaching, higher education administration, diversity training and public school leadership/teacher development.  Her research agenda focused on multicultural education, concerns on educational and occupational choices of adolescent black girls, and the recruitment of under-represented population in educational careers.

Dr. Carter-Lowery began her career as a student in the public schools of Canton, OH. Dr. Carter-Lowery finished her career a faculty member at Central Connecticut State University (CCSU) in the Department of Educational Leadership & Instructional Technology (1991-2007).  She continues to teach as an adjunct faculty in the Department of Educational Leadership & Instructional Technology Masters program in Jamaica. She stated that teaching and working with the teachers and school leaders in Jamaica has been a highlight in her career.

The National Association of Multicultural Education awarded Dr. Penny Lisi and Dr. Bill Howe the Philip C. Chinn Book Award.

The Philip C. Chinn Multicultural Book Award must meet the following eligibility criteria:

A) Fosters awareness, acceptance, and affirmation of diversity in society.

B)  Is an original work that has wide audience appeal and creates an interest in multicultural issues.

C)  Contributes to the development of multicultural education.

D) Maintains high multicultural standards in its genre.

William A. Howe and Penelope L. Lisi, Sage Publications, Inc.

Dr. Penelope L. Lisi, is a Professor in the Department of Educational Leadership & Instructional Technology at Central Connecticut State University. Dr. Lisi also teaches annually in CCSU’s masters degree program at Sam Sharpe Teachers College, Montego Bay, Jamaica. Her scholarly work focuses on leadership for social justice, leadership for teaching and learning, and leadership in international school settings.

Dr. Lisi has delivered more than 45 peer-reviewed papers at conferences in the United States, England, Finland, Portugal, Hungary, Switzerland, Jamaica, and Iceland. She is an adjunct faculty member in the Global Education Program through The College of New Jersey, teaching summer courses since 2005 in Palma de Mallorca.

At CCSU, Dr. Lisi also serves as Director of the Center for Multicultural Research and Education. She has been a primary sponsor of the annual New England Conference for Multicultural Education (NECME).

Since 1998, Dr. Lisi has served as editor of Multicultural Perspectives, the official scholarly publication of the National Association for Multicultural Education (NAME).

Dr. Bill Howe is the program manager for multicultural education at the Connecticut State Department of Education. He is also an adjunct professor of education at the University of Connecticut, Albertus Magnus College and Quinnipiac University.  He is Chair of the Connecticut Asian Pacific American Affairs Commission. For thirteen years he served on the board of NAME and is a Past President. He has been an educator for over 35 years in the U.S. and Canada.

The Department of Educational Leadership & Instructional Technology at Central Connecticut State University seeks to prepare well-educated and competent practitioners who are capable of improving the quality of education for Connecticut's children. The Department of Educational Leadership & Instructional Technology offers a Master of Science in Educational Technology, a Master of Science in Educational Leadership, and a sixth-year certificate leading to certification as an intermediate administrator or supervisor. The department also offers an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership. The department is characterized by its emphasis on leadership for valuing diversity and achieving equity, innovations in technology in education, school improvement and systemic change, reflective processes, and action research as a basis for decision-making.The department includes twelve full time education faculty, several of whom teach courses in other departments, in addition to teaching within the Department of Educational Leadership & Instructional Technology.  The Department values interdisciplinary collaboration as a means of fulfilling its goals. As such, department faculty work collaboratively to design programs which will prepare professional educators with the skills and dispositions needed to create learning environments where all learners will be successful. Department faculty are also associated with the Center for Multicultural Research and Education, and the Center for Innovation in Teaching and Technology.
