News and Announcements

February, 2009

Director's Corner:

Greetings All

As many of you may know, Dr. Tim Rickard is the Interim Director for the spring and summer 2009 as I am on professional leave in Mexico. We are all very excited about the continued growth and success of our program, and look forward to the graduating class of 2008/2009 obtaining jobs in the industry despite the tight economy. With the help of our THS advisory faculty committee and the support of tourism industry professionals, we will continue to offer our students the educational and practical experience necessary for them to succeed in this competitive industry.

Over the past 5 years, our program has grown from approximately 20 students to over 100 (as of this year), and we continue to attract transfer students from both our state community colleges and from other reputable regional schools such as Johnson and Wales.  We believe our unique blend of courses from both the School of Arts and Sciences and the School of Business provides our students with a unique perspective on tourism and hospitality, that will better prepare them for managerial positions in the industry. Our students are finding plenty of exciting internship and employment opportunities in the region and across the country, and we are committed to helping our students find the right job  for them. Our curriculum will continue to evolve in order for us to meet the needs  of both the traditional hospitality industry (i.e., hotels, resorts etc. ) and those specific needs of the growing Culinary and Cultural/Heritage tourism sectors which includes so many for-profit and non-profit organizations.

Above all we want to create a flexible program that meets the needs of our students and the private and public sector of the industry. We welcome any question sand comments regarding our program and look forward to a great new year here at CCSU.

Announcements:

  • David Johnson is teaching a new THS practicum course this semester that focuses on the hotel industry. Mr. Johnson has a wealth of experience in this industry as both a manager and consultant.
  • Sheryl N. Hack and Beverly Lucas are teaching a new THS topics course on cultural and heritage tourism. Both instructors have years of experience and come to us as adjunct professors from the Connecticut Landmarks Society.

Of note:

As our program continues to grow and graduate students, we now have students working in all aspects of the industry from coast to coast. Several of our students are also taking advantage of study abroad opportunities in countries such as Brazil (Julie Tuttle and Davion Jones), France (Arlena Hill), Barbados (Jody Fletcher), Spain (Roxanne Fabrizio), the U.K., and Australia (Faith Olson).

We would also like to give a special welcome to the many international students who have come to the U.S. to participate in our program. We are welcoming students from Brazil, Jamaica, Barbados, the U.K., Poland, Albania, and Hungary.
