Collection of the Month

Longshaw Kraus Porritt (10/05/1895 -2/22/1982) initially enlisted in the American Ambulance Field Service in March 1917, originally assigned to the S.S.U. 17, and served with the 97th Division of the French Army in the Verdun and Chemin des Dames Sectors. He was awarded the French Croix de Guerre, for service beyond the call of duty.

In September 1917 Porritt enlisted in the U.S. Naval Aviation Service. Porritt was injured in an accident about three months later and was healing at Brest France when Italy suffered a major defeat in the battle of Caporetto. Although Americans had not entered the war yet he was able to join a large number of American ambulance drivers to support the Red Cross at the Italian front. For taking this position he was commissioned as a 2nd LT. Porritt spent almost a year in Italy and participated in the battle of Piave and the battle of Vittorio-Veneto. He was awarded the Italian Croce Merito Di Guerra, for outstanding service.
You can view Mr. Porritt’s collection of photographs and his entire story here on our website. He has the best collection of photographs from WW I that is available in our collection.
