The Weather Center
at CCSU
Central Connecticut State University has maintained a fully operational
meteorological center since 1979. Today, CCSU's Weather Center is a
working facility, with the capability of accessing weather information
from all over the world. Students, administrators, faculty and residents
of central Connecticut turn to the Weather Center for information and
forecasts to help plan their activities.
At the heart of
the Weather Center is our state-of-the-art weather data capability. A
dedicated internet connection through Marta Systems Skytap software
provides graphical and alphanumeric weather information directly to
multiple computer terminals. This includes maps, graphics of NWS
numerical and statistical models, satellite and radar data. All of these
products can be printed on demand.
A new
Davis Vantage Pro2 rooftop weather station has recently been installed,
allowing constant monitoring and archiving of local weather conditions
here in New Britain. Hourly weather data and forecast guidance are
also available through the internet. The Weather Center has full internet
capability on multiple workstations, providing instantaneous access to
all major meteorological websites around the world. Computers at
each lab station will allow students to use timely weather data in
laboratory applications.
Students
taking upper level courses in the meteorology program at CCSU assist in
preparing daily forecasts, gaining skill and experience while learning
how to work in an operational environment.
At Central
Connecticut State University, the Specialization in Meteorology is part
of the Bachelor of Sciences degree in Earth Science. We can prepare you
for an exciting and successful career in Meteorology by putting together
a sequence of courses that will lead you into advanced study in the
atmospheric sciences. Among the courses you'll need to take are:
- Introductory Meteorology
- Physical Meteorology
- Dynamic Meteorology
- Weather Analysis & Forecasting
- Applied Climatology
- Physical Oceanography
- Hydrogeology
There
are also additional requirements in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and
Computer Science. CCSU graduates have gone on to employment in the
atmospheric sciences or related fields, or to earn advanced degrees in
the Atmospheric Sciences at such universities as Albany State University,
the University of Michigan and the University of Maryland. The CCSU
Meteorology minor is housed within the Department of Physics & Earth
Science.
