Reproductive Choice Tabling                                                 
Date:  September 1st, 2nd & 3rd                                          Location: SC  Lobby
This support group aided young women in identifying the signs of a possible unhealthy relationship and how to address the warning signs. It also provided resource on domestic violence. 


Making Strides Against Breast Cancer: Tabling
Date: September 14th & 16th           Time: 10:00am-4:00pm          Location: SC Lobby
When making strides against Breast Cancer it is more than a walk,  the American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer describes the progress we’re making together to fight this disease, provide comfort and hope, and save lives from breast cancer. With support we can end breast cancer once and for all.  Sign up and donate to walk with Team: CCSU Ruthe Boyea Women’s Center.  The walk is scheduled for Sunday, October 18, 2009. Telling HerStory: Dr. Gloria Brown-Wright

Telling Her Story provides an opportunity for CCSU female students, staff, faculty and administrators to meet once a month to share their personal and professional successes.
Each month, a female member of the campus community is selected to speak about her work, her life and her challenges in an informal setting among fellow female students, faculty, staff and administrators. The goal of the series is to develop a supportive community for females on campus as well as develop mentoring relationships for new female students, staff, faculty and administrators.

Film Director Reggie Bullock visits CCSU to screen his film "A War For Your Soul". “A War for Your Soul” takes a deep and insightful look into issues that African Americans face in society.  "A War For Your Soul" was independently released on the internet, and has catapulted as a “stirring, epic and inspirational” video for today’s generation”. Over 750,000 people have watched “A War For Your Soul” in four short months. The video has garnered praise from mayors, city leaders, youth and civic organizations from Ghana, Israel, the Caribbean, U.K. and other countries for sparking dialogue in encouraging adults to play a more active role in educating children. Sponsored with the Black Student Union and the CCSU NAACP.

Voices Heard Sisters Unseen
Date: Thursday, October 8, 2009  Time 12:15pm  Location: Women’s Center Lounge
VOICES HEARD SISTERS UNSEEN is a powerful and inspirational videotape showing how survivors of domestic violence are working to change the way the system treats battered women in search of justice and safety. Interviews, poetry, dance and music combine to present a feminist analysis about how courts, police and social services 're-victimize' battered women who are deaf, disabled, lesbians, prostitutes, HIV-positive and without official immigrant status. VOICES HEARD SISTERS UNSEEN is an important call for multi-issue activism and an integrated response to services for battered women.

Mildred Muhammad: “Scared Silent”
Ex-wife of the D.C Sniper speaks about Domestic Violence and the crime that startled the nation.

Mildred Muhammad is a domestic violence survivor with a story to tell the world. It is not just "a" story – it is "one of the many" stories built on the experiences of domestic violence and the depths of its terror. After her children were kidnapped and her inability to go on living without them, she began the silent struggle of looking for them, knowing that if she exposed herself, John Allen Muhammad would locate her and kill her.

Causing Pain: Real Stories of Dating Abuse and Violence

This program features true stories of students and professionals who have been in, or witnessed, abusive relationships. The video utilizes their experiences and insights so that one can recognize and prevent dating abuse in their own lives, or in the lives of others.

The Women’s Social and Networking provides an opportunity for the women at CCSU to meet monthly in a social setting to network with each other and build camaraderie amongst the female faculty, staff, administrators and clerical workers.

 

Cindy Sheehan: One Person Can Make a Difference

Cindy Sheehan is an internationally known mom and peace & social justice advocate whose son, Army Specialist Casey A. Sheehan, was killed in action in Sadr City, Baghdad, on April 4, 2004. Cindy Sheehan is founder of Gold Star Families for Peace, an organization of Americans who have had loved ones killed in wars. As an act of protest against the war, in August 2005 Cindy took a stand outside of George Bush's home in Crawford, Texas asking what noble cause her son died for; this began the Camp Casey peace movement
