Education student earns $5,000 scholarship

Central Connecticut State University student Andrew Amaya was awarded a $6,000 Community Foundation of Greater New Britain Alma Exley Scholarship for 2024.

Alma Exley Scholarships are awarded to students of color who are enrolled in teacher-preparation programs throughout Connecticut. Amaya is majoring in Secondary Education with a focus on history.

The Alma Exley Scholarship Program was established in 1995 to carry on the work the late Alma Exley of West Hartford, who led an effort at the State Department of Education to bring more people of color into the teaching profession. The program honors and supports future educators who will mirror the diversity of the student population, understand students’ diverse cultural backgrounds, and serve as positive role models for minority and non-minority students.
